A guide to getting the most out of Islamic Heritage

Browsing Articles

The Articles page is the main gateway to our 267 articles. You can browse the full collection or narrow it down using the filter bar at the top:

  • Search: Type any keyword to search by title, summary, or topic. Results update instantly as you type.
  • Type filter: Filter by article category — Person, Dynasty, Event, Place, Building, Science, Theology, Practice, and more. You can select multiple types at once.
  • Era filter: Browse by historical period — Prophetic Era, Rashidun Caliphate, Abbasid Caliphate, Islamic Golden Age, Ottoman Empire, and 9 more. Multiple eras can be selected simultaneously.
  • Tag filter: Search through 1,600+ topic tags to find exactly what you're looking for. Type a few letters and matching tags appear instantly.
  • Sort: Arrange results by Title, Type, Era, or Date Range.

Each article card shows its title, type badge, a brief summary, era badge, date range, and top tags — giving you a quick overview before clicking through.

Reading Articles

Each article is a comprehensive, encyclopaedic treatment of its subject. At the bottom of every article, you'll find:

  • References and Further Reading: Organized into Primary Islamic Sources, Classical Islamic Sources, Academic and Scholarly Sources, and Further Reading — so you can verify claims and explore deeper.
  • Internal links: Blue text links throughout the article connect you to other related articles in the encyclopaedia. Click any to navigate between topics.
  • Related articles: Suggested reading based on the topic you're viewing.

Browse by Era

The Eras page lets you explore articles organized by historical period. We cover 14 eras from the earliest Islamic history through the modern age. Each era page shows all articles from that period with a brief introduction to the era's significance.

Learning Paths

Not sure where to start? Our Learning Paths provide curated sequences of articles designed for structured learning:

  • Introduction to Islamic History — Start here if you're new to the subject
  • The Golden Age of Science — Islamic contributions to mathematics, medicine, and astronomy
  • The Prophetic Era — The life and times of Prophet Muhammad
  • Islamic Architecture — Masterpieces from the Kaaba to the Taj Mahal
  • Women in Islam — Remarkable women who shaped Islamic history

Each path shows an estimated reading time and takes you through articles in a logical sequence.

Glossary

The Glossary contains 85 key Islamic terms with their Arabic script, transliteration, definition, and related terms. Use it as a quick reference when you encounter unfamiliar terminology in articles. Clicking a glossary term shows you all articles that discuss that concept.

Advanced Search

The Search page provides a full-text search across all articles, glossary terms, and eras. It searches titles, summaries, and content to help you find exactly what you need.

Customizing Your Experience

Three buttons in the top-right corner of the navigation bar let you personalize the site:

  • Typography (T icon): Choose from 4 font options — System (default), Inter, Merriweather, or Noto Serif. Serif fonts like Merriweather work well for long-form reading.
  • Accent Color (colored circle): Pick from 5 accent colors — Blue (default), Green, Purple, Amber, or Teal — to personalize the site's visual theme.
  • Dark Mode (moon/sun icon): Switch between light and dark mode. Dark mode is easier on the eyes for nighttime reading. The site respects your system preference on first visit.

All preferences are saved automatically and persist between visits.

Bookmarks

Found an article you want to return to? Use the Bookmarks feature to save articles for later reading. Your bookmarks are stored locally in your browser.

What's New

The What's New page tracks all recent additions and improvements — new articles, feature updates, and content expansions. Check it periodically to see what's been added.

Bibliography

The Bibliography page (under Resources in the footer) lists the core scholarly sources that form the foundation of the entire encyclopaedia — primary Islamic texts, classical historians, and modern academic works. Use it to understand the scholarly basis behind our content.

Mobile Use

The entire site is fully responsive and works on phones and tablets. On mobile, the navigation menu collapses into a hamburger menu (☰) — tap it to access all pages. All customization features (dark mode, fonts, colors) work on mobile as well.
