Al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik (c. 668-715 CE) was the Umayyad caliph under whose reign the Islamic empire reached its greatest territorial extent — with simultaneous conquests in Spain, North Africa, Central Asia, and India — and who built some of Islam's greatest architectural monuments.

Baha al-Din Naqshband of Bukhara (1318-1389 CE) gave his name to the Naqshbandi order, one of the most widespread in Islam. His insistence on silent remembrance and his rejection of music, retreat and distinctive dress set the order apart from every other Sufi path of his age.

Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik (72-125 AH / 691-743 CE) was the tenth Umayyad caliph, whose nineteen-year reign was the dynasty's last long one. A careful administrator, he reorganised the diwans, the police and the postal service while the frontiers stopped advancing.

Timur (1336-1405 CE), known in the West as Tamerlane, was a Turco-Mongol conqueror who founded the Timurid Empire, creating one of the largest empires in history through his military campaigns across Central Asia, Persia, and India.
