Ahl al-Bayt

The Prophet's Household

Ahl al-Bayt, the People of the House, refers to the family of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ — those bound to him by the closest ties of blood and marriage who played central roles in the history of early Islam. The term carries profound theological and historical weight across all branches of Islam, though its precise scope is understood differently by various traditions.

At its core, the household includes the Prophet's daughter Fatimah, his son-in-law and cousin Ali ibn Abi Talib, and their children Hasan and Husayn — the family specifically covered by the Prophet's cloak in the famous hadith of the Kisa. The Prophet's wives, the Mothers of the Believers, are also included by Quranic designation. Together these figures shaped the spiritual, political, and intellectual life of the early community, and their legacy reverberates through Islamic history in ways that continue to define the faith's major traditions.

The members of this household endured extraordinary trials — from the persecution of Mecca to the tragedies of Karbala — and their stories encompass both the highest moments of the Prophetic era and the painful divisions that emerged after it. Their lives are studied not only as history but as models of faith, sacrifice, and devotion.
