Battle of Nicopolis

The Battle of Nicopolis, fought on 25 September 1396 CE, was a decisive Ottoman victory over a combined Western European crusading army, marking the last major crusade of the medieval period and cementing Ottoman dominance over the Balkans. The catastrophic defeat of the Franco-Burgundian, Hungarian, and allied forces under King Sigismund of Hungary by Sultan Bayezid I demonstrated the military supremacy of the Ottoman state and shattered European hopes of reversing Ottoman expansion in southeastern Europe.

Bayezid I (r. 1389–1402), known as Yıldırım (the Thunderbolt) for his swift military campaigns, dramatically expanded the Ottoman state across the Balkans and Anatolia before his catastrophic defeat at the Battle of Ankara in 1402. His reign represents both the zenith of early Ottoman expansion and the fragility of a rapidly assembled empire when confronted by Timur's world-conquering forces.
